Other than paying whatever bill a debt collector is trying to collect, consumers have a limited number of ways to make one who is contacting them stop doing so. The most effective way to stop a debt collector in his tracks is to mail him a "cease and desist" letter in accordance with Section 805(c) of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (the FDCPA).
