About me - Pete Smits

aboutme

Greetings -

By day, my background is legal and technical, yet another attorney that also pursues a career as a writer. As such, I have written and published extensively on Fantasy Football and related topics, such as sports handicapping and gambling generally. In the course of my technical career, I have written a fair amount of Applications Notes on a variety of technical subjects; on the legal front, I have spent most of my career writing legal briefs, along with publishing legal articles in Law Journals.

On the more enjoyable side of things, I have written two editions of a book on Fantasy Football ("FF")strategy: "Fantasy Football for Blood and Profit," which is available through my favorites link at right and, during the NFL season, contribute to the mightiest FF Pre-season Report in existence and write several weekly columns for Fantasy Insights during each season.

And, I am working on a political thriller novel that draws on my ethnic background as a relatively rare Latvian-American, first generation in the US after my parents separately emigrated from Latvia during WW II.

I'm originally from Detroit, but have lived in warm weather climates since graduating from Michigan State, first Dallas, then Austin, Los Angeles and back to Austin, which I now firmly consider home.

I'm presently between full-time jobs as my last company was a start-up that is in the process of running out of funding, so am looking for both short-term and long-term projects to further my ideal career and pay a few bills on the side.

Best wishes,

Pete in Austin

KEEPING YOUR SANITY AT INSANE TIMES: Surviving Job Search Limbo

Unfortunately and fully unexpectedly as of a decade ago, several events - the dot.com busts, the economy after 9/11, moving back home after a decade away and life in general conspired to make holding down a full-time position more difficult than I would have imagined. Nevertheless, as far as I can tell, I have maintained some measure of financial security, albeit at a lower ebb, and a generally positive outlook with a measure of sanity and confidence still intact.
