About me - Joel Akin

aboutme

It really began when I was born in Lansing. If you know a little about Michigan it is the port of no return. I lived there until I moved and that movement was young.

Our family moved to a place called UP and it was up in the boonies. Then it was called Upper Michigan. That is where I grew up surrounded by the bounty found not just in food but in people. It is there my heart still yearns for.

After years of searching for a dream we moved to Oshkosh and then back to Upper Michigan to a town called Menominee. I believe it means wild rice which grew along the local river.

One part of this story is my father moved because he was a pioneer pastor. We lived poor and it never really changed even after we moved to Canada.

By this time I had finished college where I obtained my BA in English and a minor in religion and communications.

In my final year at college I was fortunate to have a roommate who was a bass voice unlike any other. He introduced me to the staff at the local radio station as I also had a bass voice. It was Christian radio and I was soon part of the disk jockey club.

From there several more moves ensued until we reached a home in Calgary where I live now. Along the way I went into a lot of suffering enduring years of doctors and trials over the issue of my body melting down.

When it was over I was diagnosed with many sicknesses and diseases. More so then most people and that is among people of disability. I hurt from head to toe and among the things most prominent is my voice 'loss'. I say loss for it is officially lost but on occasion God gives me strength so I can whisper or talk briefly.

Calgary is where I live but I am a person of prayer. As such I go into things which I believe are prayer for people who are like me. Not just the disabled but the afflicted and the hurt. In some ways you might call us the poor.
As a poor person I have learned how to make do and have found life can be fulfilling if you have goals and hope and dreams and can trust God.
As scripture says "The poor you have with you always." I am convinced Jesus did not mean it as a curse but as a promise of things God has planned for us called gifts to men.

brieflyme

My passion is ...

life. I gain by seeking. I know by seeing. I learn by giving. So give me a time and I will carry you to a spring which flows with living water. It is the life you can have through a faith in Jesus and a friendship with God through His Spirit.

I know too much about ...

As much as one can. I give it but it keeps flowing out like rivers which are of time. One day I will write good. Until then I strive for goodness and live with life of meager rations

My parents always told me ...

in whatever you do live as a Christian. It is a fight for right and a fight for justice.

My childhood ambition ...

Was to build a rocket to take me to the moon. I settled for chasing bugs and having fun with gunpowder.

My favorite memory ...

The time I wrote a poem about being on the beach in Malaysia. It started I sat by the sea today and watched the waves come in

Why I write ...

Everyone has a story to tell. Mine is interesting. So I found a way of sharing it where people live squeaky and talk with wisdom.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

My favorite subject is things that do not exist. At least to some. I find it interesting that those who are most skeptical of God are the most open to Aliens. Figure that.

My first job ...

Working at Sinclair pumping gas as a five year old. Seriously. I only worked there briefly and my next job was in newspapers. Throwing them that is.

My best moment ...

If I carry a thought of time it might be the day I saw a gray bird change. It became a bluebird. It was a moment in life I will never forget when God created a miracle in front of me. I saw the bird as female. She was with a gray male and they were chasing each other. God turned her a beautiful blue while I watched. And she blue away as the bluebird of happiness.

My inspiration ...

God. No question. I learned how to live by spending time with him. I learned that life is filled with wonders beyond the concept of man. And we are his creation.
