Using Search on Helium

There are lots of places to use Search, and lots of reasons to use it, too. Find the primary search field at the very top right-hand corner of most pages. Use Search to find:

  • Article titles: Search for a specific title. (Example: How to recover from a broken heart)
  • Article content: Search for a quote or phrase. (Example: heart was made to be broken)
  • Keywords: Search keywords related to titles and or articles. (Example: broken heart, love, breakup)
  • Pen names: Search for your favorite Helium writer by pen name. (Example: Don Juan)

Search. Don’t sob.

The connection between Search and writing articles

What’s the connection between Search and writing articles? Say you want to write about gardening and wildflowers . . .
  1. Search for the topic (wildflowers).
  2. Results might return “Creating a wildflower garden.” (Perfect! That’s just what you wanted!)
  3. Click on the title, and then on “Write now.” Now write your article.

You can also use Search to help find a title of interest. Using keywords (words that have a connection to the content), you’ll find a list of titles that relate to your topic of interest. If you want to write about how to clip your rabbit’s nails, type in “clipping, nails, rabbits” and get relevant results, like “Tips for clipping your rabbit’s nails.” It’s all starting to make sense, isn’t it?

TIP: If you write to an existing title, your article will be published right away. If you initiate a new title and we find it already exists, your article will be added to the existing title. So it pays to search.

Bonus search (don’t ask and you shall still receive)

There are places on the site where Search is provided even though you didn’t ask for it. Bonus! One such area is in the write flow.

To enjoy this bonus search:

  • Click on “Write” in the horizontal navigation bar.
  • Choose a channel from the drop-down menus.
  • When you reach the end of the channel drop-downs, all the titles available in this subchannel are revealed in the drop-down window. You choose how you want to filter titles. Your choices are:
    • Recent Article Titles
    • Featured Article Titles
    • Most Popular
    • New Titles: Writers Needed
  • If, after perusing the title choices, you just cannot find the subject matter you want to write about, you can offer a totally new article title. To do that, click on “Initiate a new article title.”
  • As you write your new title, Search delivers topics that might be appropriate for the article you intend to write. (We’re covering all our bases here — we don’t want duplicate titles.)
