Presidential Elections 2008

Best blogs on the US election 2008

It's the election of a lifetime, with great candidates and excited voters. America will choose a new President in 2008. But as history is being made - which blogs will offer the best coverage?

Here's a list of the top election blogs.

Swampland - http://time-blog.com/swampland/

Time magazine pulled together an amazing staff for their political blog. It includes all of Time magazine's political staff - including columnist Joe Klein, national correspondent Karen Tumulty, and Washington Bureau chief Jay Carney. But thrown into the mix are three more reporters, including Ana Marie Cox, the original sharp-tongued commentator from Gawker's infamous political blog, Wonkette. The Republican and Democratic candidates get equal coverage, as each reporter pitches in with their juiciest details about the ongoing campaigns. Their insights are original, and their writing is sharp and professional. But their real strength is the six-blogger team, which makes the blog thorough and comprehensive, while keeping it

lively.

Tales from the Trail - http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/

Reuters is one of America's top news organizations - and their political reporters filed one great anecdote after another on this dedicated campaign blog. It's fun to watch news reporters using the livelier writing style of an online blog. (One reporter wrote playfully that the Walt Disney corporation "has showered Clinton with more Mickeybucks than any other presidential contender this year.") Because they're on the campaign trail, they hear all the best political news - about both Republicans and Democrats - and they write it up in short, effective bursts. It's the best of both worlds - an online blog, but with original news reporting from Reuters.

The Field - http://ruralvotes.com/thefield/

Hillary Clinton thought she'd clinch the nomination on Super Tuesday. Instead Barack Obama fought her to a draw, using a secret weapon: rural voters. Only seasoned political reporter Al Giordano identified that trend early, on his blog "The Field." He detected Barack's surge back in the Iowa primaries, and even pinpointed its source: the widespread base of energized supporters. Giordano even flew to the critical contests in Texas and Nevada, asking questions of campaign staffers and reading the clues in what they said - and what they didn't! He not only reads polls, but also understands the signifance of their individual demographic groups, and Giordano recognized the different patterns emerging in caucus states, even before Super Tuesday, when over 80% of Idaho's Democrats eventually voted for Barack.

Political Wire - http://www.politicalwire.com

Most blogs offer opinions, but Political Wire offers facts. Every crucial poll and game-changing endorsement gets a notice here, along with a thought-provoking selection of quotes from the candidates and their supporters. They delve into the news that effects the reality of campaigns - which messages are working with the American people, and which messages are not. In some ways they know what the candidates need to do even before the candidates themselves!
