A great sandwich starts with fresh interesting ingredients.

My seven layers of flavor include the following:

1. Hearty, whole-grain breads or bread alternatives. Don't settle for supermarket bread, find a local bread baker or bake your own. Bagels, pita, croissants, baguettes, kaiser rolls and focaccia loaves all make great sandwiches.

2. Use thinly sliced meats and cheeses. Thin meats and cheeses are more visually appealing and actually taste better. And don't stop with ham and American cheese try premium meats including roast beef, corned beef, smoked turkey, Gouda, fresh mozzarella, Genoa salami, Mortadella, aged Cheddar and your favorites.

3. Think fresh crisp vegetables. But don't stop at lettuce and tomato.Thinly sliced cucumbers, peppers, red onion, cabbage, radish, broccoli sprouts, arugula and more add a healthy crunch and flavor.

4. Try unique condiments. Flavored mayonnaise comes in many flavors including basil, garlic, wasabi and horseradish. Or add chutneys, pickles, relish and flavored mustards which can add heat and flavor.

5. Experiment with different ingredients. Try coleslaw, chopped hard-cooked eggs,artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini or salsa to make your creation unique.

6. Toast your sandwich for a different flavor. There's a reason why panini are so popular. A sandwich press can add another dimension to a boring sandwich.

7. Look to a cookbook for help and then experiment. A classic Reuben can be good, your Turkey Reuben with smoked Gouda, cranberry chutney and fresh coleslaw can be outstanding. Don't be afraid to make a new classic sandwich combination.
