I have given the Security Blanket debate some serious thought and decided to join the 'Ayes' to the right. There is, however, one proviso, that I may stretch the parameters of the debate slightly.
As I see it, a security blanket does not necessarily need to be a blanket. It can be the corner of a pillow case or a twiddle of hair. I have known children to find security and comfort in Floppity the long legged, floppy armed orange and brown knitted stuffed 'thingy', and Suck-a-thumb the tiny teddy bear who cleverly sucked his own thumb. Then there was Fat Lump and his friend Fat Lump! I know one little girl who dragged her baby duvet everywhere she went - indoors and out, down the street and on the park.
Whatever the security item, blanket or teddy, all are thrown out of the cot when baby is hungry and seeking the security of her next feed. Fickle as she is, this security is short lived and the full bellied babe will soon quickly turn to a soft, dry diaper for comfort.
I believe that when a baby feels secure she is more likely to sleep peacefully; each baby has his or her own way of feeling secure. Care givers must quickly learn to listen to, and recognize, the range of cries and other sounds that their baby makes. Having recognised the cry to then interpret the need and meet it accordingly. The more skilful bay and caregiver become in this communication, the more likely they will be to sleep through the night.
Oh! Did I mention routine? No? Well may be I will save that for the next debate.
