A great strategy for thinking "outside of the box" is to try to ignore the programming that structures your way of thinking presently. The expression that "we've always done it this way" exemplifies programmed thinking. Unfortunately, this is often precisely what gets in our way when trying to solve problems creatively.
Rote education is a wonderful tool for learning. It also represents a type of programming. People who are known for their ability to think outside of the box are able to get beyond traditional solutions by using their own innate abilities to think creatively. To throw off these chains that limit us, a few mental exercises can be useful.
When one is called upon to create an approach to doing practically anything, there are precedents that can be called upon. In analysis, one should ask themselves the question, "how has this been done in the past?". Then, the thought processes should look at the manner in which the problem has been handled lately. With those thoughts in mind, one should ponder if there might be a better way. That question should be asked with the creative juices ready to flow.
Instead of being creatures of habit, one should try to avoid that comfortable behavioral niche. Every possible scenario has a multitude of potential avenues that can be pursued. What has traditionally been the best approach for the average person, or business, is not necessarily the best approach for you! Every individual has a capacity that varies from everyone else. By eliminating the constrictions of tradition, we can literally get out of our own way, and think outside of the box.
This process takes a lot of courage. To dare to be different, and to have faith in one's own ideas is not easy. The benefit is obvious though, by taking the risks of creating one also is positioned to be rewarded for that creativity. If you do think outside of the box, you might just surprise yourself by unlocking potential that you have been blocking!
