There are endless thoughtful gifts for gardeners that recycle things other people would class as junk. Many will gratefully receive bags of autumn leaves or grass clippings to bulk out their compost heaps or use on lasagna garden beds. Others will happily reuse plant pots or plastic containers for use as seed trays or miniature cloches. And don't forget to pass on your empty jars when it's canning season.

If you have a garden yourself then try presenting your favorite gardener with a coupon that entitles them to spend an hour or two taking cuttings or collecting seeds from the plants in your garden that they really covet.

When it's a special occasion and nothing but a 'proper' gift will do, then I find that gardeners can never have too many pairs of gloves. A really comfortable and waterproof pair of gloves is worth its weight in gold.

If that doesn't suit then consider a copper trowel. Smart, hard wearing and comfortable to use, copper tools are also reputed to deter slugs from living in your soil so a copper trowel is two gifts in one!

The latest gardening books are always welcome, particularly in winter when the inspiration they provide makes up for dull weather outside. And in spring, gift certificates for seed companies will be well received.
