I rented "The Prestige" last night.
It is an intriguing flick, with turns and twists. The movie is centered around the craft of illusion, with illusion itself a part of the plot.
The beginning of the movie was a bit hard to follow, with flashbacks and two magician's each reading each other's journal... one of the magicians writes about what he read in the other's journal, and for a brief second, it gave me a headache.
The movie does come back together as the plots catch up with themselves.
David Bowie plays eccentric and mysterious scientist Nickola Tesla, whose role is significant to the story, but with minimal dialog. His portrayal is believable, and I didn't realize it was Bowie until the very end.
Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Michael Cain were all sincere and passionate in their acting, though I found Piper Perabo and Scarlett Johansson did not shine in comparison. They were added as "eye candy" rather than for their acting abilities.
The costume and set are amazing and intriquing, showing a gritty and industrialized Victorian age.
The DVD was dissapointing, with very few special features. The design was interesting, but without content, it was not worth buying.
My advice, rent it for a week, watch it several times. Don't buy it until a special edition with more DVD extras comes out.
