Many old and traditional folk instruments are new and exotic when they come into a new culture. These instruments are more available now than ever before and can often be purchased over the internet.
The balalaika of Russia is a three stringed instrument similar to mandolin or guitar. Advanced playing on the balalaika may be difficult to learn, but it is also used for simple chords to accompany singing. I've found that it's easier to learn balalaika chords than guitar chords because of fewer strings being involved.
The balalaika is also easier to tune, and easier for people with small hands to play. This instrument is available through Amazon.com, Lark in the Morning, and may be found on eBay.
There are also exotic instruments of Asia. A geomungo is a Korean instrument similar to a large dulcimer or a Japanese koto. The strings are plucked with a stick. The instrument may gain popularity as it has recently been used in the very popular Korean drama 'Hwang Jini', which is currently available in the USA on Dish Network's channel 9850.
A European exotic instrument is the English concertina. It is said to be the easiest instrument to learn. It is a bit like a small accordian, played by pressing the buttons on the end. The Anglo concertina is similar, usually cheaper, but a bit more complicated, since each button plays two different notes.
