Create a wedding cake card box for your reception
Wedding cake card boxes are a novel means for collecting cards from guests attending your wedding reception or anniversary party. It's not only functional, it's a beautiful way to add a centerpiece to the gift table on your special day.
Lovely wedding cake card boxes can be made from plain brown paper mache boxes that are available in most craft stores. Most people choose either round or square boxes since this is the most common shape for a traditional wedding cake.
Choose three boxes that are in graduating sizes, meaning that boxes should be able to "nest" or fit inside one another. This is a good way to make certain the boxes are somewhat proportionate. You can also stack the boxes, with the largest box at the bottom and the smallest box on the top. Viewing the boxes this way will help you to discern whether or not the sizes look balanced with one another. The smallest box should be large enough so that when a slit is cut in the lid, an average-size greeting card may be inserted easily.
After you have chosen the appropriate boxes for your project, select acrylic paints. You will generally need no more than about 2-3 two ounce bottles to cover all of the boxes.
Choose colors in muted whites or ivory for the most elegant look. Add very pale pinks, blues, yellows, and browns to your palette, if you wish, in hues that compliment your wedding color scheme.
The boxes can be painted using an inexpensive sponge brush, allowing paint to dry completely between coats. You will generally need about 2 coats of paint to cover the boxes evenly. There is no need to paint the inside of the boxes or lids.
After painting your boxes with a subtle base coat, you can stencil them using a purchased stencil of your choice and a makeup sponge. Dab makeup sponge lightly in a soft, contrasting paint color. Blot the makeup sponge well on a paper towel or napkin. Place stencil on the box and dab paint gently with the sponge. You can always add more paint if necessary.
Boxes can be "flecked" or spatter-painted using a spatter-brush or toothbrush dipped in a slightly diluted contrasting paint color such as gold, silver, or white. Paint is flecked sparingly on the surface of the box by quickly running your fingers over the bristles. This technique can add dimension to your cake boxes, but be careful about overdoing it! You may need to practice a few times on a sheet of paper to achieve the desired look.
