Google is not only the best overall, but it has loads of features that few people use, such as mathematical functions, number lookup, local searches and translations.

In addition, you can get considerably better results by clicking on advanced search otions on the top of the page. This includes several specialized searches,
such as an Google Books, Google Scholar and Google News.

If you are in a hurry, here are some tips for increasing the effectiveness of searches from the main page.

For an exact phrase. = "search phrase"
Add synonyms to your search. = ~searchterm
One term and not another. = searchterm _exclude
Related sites to a known one. = related:[add name of site]
Information on a stock. = stocks: [add ticker symbol]
Recent dates (last 3,6,12 months)= searchterm date:[3,6, or 12]
Search ony one site. = site:
Filter out adult content. = Safesearch: searchterm
