To stop your dog from running away you first have to ask yourself why he or she is running.

Is Fido not getting the exercise he needs? Make sure you're walking your dog regularly, and giving him the run time he needs. Certain breeds of dogs are natural runners, and will require more exercise than other breeds, so if you have a dog like a Husky, make sure you take him out regularly to wear off some of that built in energy that he has to run off.

Is your dog spayed or neutered? Face it, dogs are dogs, and if they aren't fixed and smell Fifi that may be in heat down the street, at the first chance, Brutus is going to go with his animal instincts to seek out Fifi! Having your your dog spayed or neutered will deter much of this need to seek out another dog in the neighbourhood. I'm speaking from experience here. We have a black lab that used to visit every Fifi in a 2 mile radius every chance he could get. Now he's without his klinkers, and he's more apt to stay in our yard than when he had them!

Has your dog had any training? There are many wonderful canine trainers out there that will teach you and Fido how to be perfect pet and master. Simple commands they will teach the both of you will work some wonders, and many offer classes for both puppies and older dogs. Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks!

There are other methods you can use to keep Fido in his own yard on the market, including invisible fences. I don't agree with such drastic measures as these, and I don't believe they are needed. As long as you're a responsible pet owner, that is willing to spend the time with your beloved Fido, you shouldn't have to buy any sort of repellant or retardant to keep your fur baby in your own yard. Time and patience goes a long way, and of course lots and lots of love!
