About Sunshine Week

Sunshine Week is a nonpartisan, good-government effort led by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, but with a constituency that goes beyond print, broadcast and online news media to include students of all ages; federal, state and local lawmakers, both conservative and liberal; think tanks and nonprofits; civic groups; librarians; and even religious leaders.

Sunshine Week was founded on the principle that people have a right to know what their government is doing, and why. Its goal is to engage people in conversations about open government and why it must be nurtured and protected to preserve our rights and liberties.

Sunshine Week 2008: The Sunshine Campaign is an effort to encourage everyone to ask candidates, from the president to city council, to articulate their positions on open government and Freedom of Information issues. Reminding candidates that access to information is important to people helps make the issue vital, not just during election season, but also during the administrations of those elected.
