Founded in 1979, Northwoods Wildlife Center is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation and education center based in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Northwoods' mission is to improve the future of wildlife through rehabilitation, education and research.
Northwoods takes in an average of 1,000 animals and up to 120 different species each year. Its success rate for rehabilitation is 60 to 75 percent, which is higher than the national average.
In addition to rehabilitating wild animals, Northwoods seeks to educate. Staff members visit schools, camps, senior centers and festivals to educate people on how to cohabitate with wild animals. Several permanently injured Birds of Prey and turtles call Northwoods home. These "permanent residents" help educators to be stewards of wildlife and nature. Northwoods is open to the public for tours Monday through Saturday. Its education program reaches an estimated 30,000 people each year.
Northwoods operates without government funding, and relies entirely on donations from the public.
