Choosing sunglasses: Protection vs. style

The purchase of the proper pair of sunglasses is an important step in taking care of your eyes. The market is flooded with many different styles to meet the different lifestyles we live.

The cost of your glasses is going to be somewhere between $75.00 and $500.00 depending on what you choose. Take your time and do some research to help determine what your needs are in a sunglass.

The different categories are fashion, function, and classic styles. The fashion is whats hip at the time. Presently the most popular is very large glasses in a variety of shapes and colors. This is considered fashion. Second would be your functional glasses usually used for sports or an active lifestyle. The frame must fit correctly so it doesn't move when running or playing sports like tennis. The frame must also give enough coverage so if its used for water sports such as fishing and boating it will be large enough to protect your eyes from glare coming from the reflection off the water. The third is the classic styles which will remain stylish over the years.

Lenses are offered in three types of material such as polycarbonate (plastic), glass, and CR39 which is a combination of poly and glass. The poly is the most popular because it lightweight. Glass is found in the more classic styles and is desired because it does not scratch as easily as poly. Generally the lens is heavier than poly but new designs are offering lighter weight glass. The glass lens sunglasses have proven to me that it can and will last for years if used properly. The third type made of CR39 material is newer over the past few years and is becoming popular because of its resistance to scratching and more impact resistant than glass.

Choosing the type of lens also involves whether you want polarized or unpolarized. Polarization is desired to prevent squinting. It cuts the glare coming into your eyes making your sight clearer and less strain on your eyes. If you have ever had a headache from bright sun perhaps you should try the very popular polarized lens. This type of lens is usually found in the functional type glasses, but is also available in a some fashion types from different companies. The unpolarized lens is found more frequently in glasses and can be purchased at a lower price than the polarized lens.

A type of lens that most are not familiar with is the photo chromic lens which lightens and darkens with the amount of light coming into the lens. This is actually a wonderful
