American politics: Assessing the future of the Patriot Act after 2008

The U.S. Patriot Act is one of the most repressive and draconian laws to be passed in modern history by a 'free' nation and I fear it is here to stay.

We must all remember that every member of Congress except one voted for implementation of the law and I do not believe that any of the present Candidates have any intentions of either repealing or restricting the provisions of the Act that deny Us, The People, most of our Civil and human rights that were guaranteed by the Constitution

The Act became law just 6 weeks after 9/11 on October 24. 2001 which tends to indicate that most if not all of the Act was created before 9/11 since never in the history of the Congress has a law been written, debated, corrected for change and passed in such a short period of time.

The law allows every right that we have to be revoked at the order of the President and that is not Democracy but Dictatorship in action.

Some of the more salient rights we lose under the Act is:

Our right to be an American Citizen if we are born on U.S. soil since it can now be revoked thus allowing us to be deported to a country of the Governments choosing.

Our right to a trial of our peers in an open court of law and to have access to any and all evidence used against us as well as representation by a qualified attorney.

Our right to be free from unwarranted and malicious acts perpetrated upon us by our own Government.

Our right to privacy in our homes and communications.

Our right to publicly protest actions by the government that we disapprove of.

Our right to be protected from warrant-less search and seizure.

These are just the more important ones but at some point within the 500 plus page document you find all rights are covered.

The Patriot Act, through one of its enforcement agencies, the Department of Homeland Security,
even implements a provision that allows the Fire Department and EMS to spy on us when they are in our homes since 'emergencies' do not require a warrant to violate our privacy and is less suspicious than sending in the Police.

We will even lose our right to unfettered travel within our own borders when the Real ID Act becomes law. Since the DHS has jurisdiction over all public streets, highways, interstates and all public modes of transportation. By simply revoking our National ID Card, we will be required by law to carry, it can restrict us from travel at its leisure and that is an Internal Passport NOT an ID.

The wall now being constructed to keep 'immigrants' out will serve just as well to keep Americans in and is really no different than the Berlin Wall that divided East & West Germany.

We, The People, are truly the ones responsible for this repressive Act being forced upon us because we allowed our fear to silence us when the law was being passed instead of demanding that the Government back down and protect the Constitution not dismantle it which was our right. It is not anymore though since the Patriot Act allows the President to simply deny and refuse to tell us what the Government is doing to us 'for our own good' without repercussions.

Our failure to hold the President and his Administration accountable for the crimes they committed against us has set a very dangerous precedent allowing all future presidents to do exactly the same thing knowing that WE, The People, will once again allow our fear to keep us silent.

Democracy has been dealt a mortal blow by The U.S.A. Patriot Act and its replacement will be a
Police State.
