Affiliate marketing is one of many ways that you can make money online. Affiliate marketing is a simple concept. Basically, you drive traffic to a website that is selling a particular product. If the person that visits the product website used your affiliate link to get to the website and purchases the product, you get a commission. The commission is determined by the product owner and thus, if you do not like the commission breakdown, you really do not have much bargaining power (absent you being a stellar affiliate marketer) with the product owner.

Although the concept of affiliate marketing is simple enough, making a lot of money off of the same can be difficult if you do not know what you are doing. Affiliate marketing is a numbers game. The more people that you send to a particular website, the better your chances are that a sale will occur. As such, it is your goal to drive as much targeted traffic to the product website as possible. Notice that I used the word "targeted" in the previous sentence. Targeted traffic is traffic that is interested in the product with which you are affiliated. Think about it; if you drove traffic to a website about making money online, for example, and all of the traffic that you drove to that website was interested only in gardening techniques, you are not going to make any commissions. As such, you need to make sure that the traffic that you are driving is interested in the product to which you are leading the traffic. Therefore, the question becomes, how do you get targeted traffic?

Targeted traffic can be obtained through search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is the practice of making sure that your websites or your links appear first in the search engine rankings for particular key words. Therefore, using our example above, if you are searching for people who are interest in making money online, you would want to appear first in the search engine results whenever somebody searched the keywords "make money online" and other variations of such a phrase, such as "internet money," "making money online," and "how to make money online," to name a few.

Appearing in the first position of search engine results is not an easy task. As such, you are going to have to produce some keyword rich, quality content in order to do so. Producing this kind of content and doing it on a big enough scale will help your web pages, articles, blogs, or however you published the content online to appear higher in the search engine results.

You can always build a list in order to drive traffic to a site, but in regard to SEO, the best way to get targeted traffic to a product website is to have them come to you via search engines. If you start to dominate the top results for various keywords, you could see some very sizeable commission checks coming your way.
