An overview of causes of hearing loss and deafness

Hearing loss (deafness) maybe caused by MECHANICAL PROBLEM In the ear canal or the middle ear, that block the conduction of sound or by damage to the inner ear.

Auditory Nerve or Auditory Nerve Pathway in the brain (Sensational hearing loss) The two type of hearing loss are comparing by the air waves and bone waves.

sensational hearing loss is categorized as sensory when the inner ear is affected, by loud noise in the inner ear , viral infection in the inner ear.

Neural hearing loss maybe caused by brain tumors, that also damage near by nerves, and the brain stem.


How the doctors can tell , is by doing different test on your hearing or ears, each test tells you what going on in that part of the ear.

There are 6 test that can be done.

Audiometry- Deals with sound and volumes , each ear is tested separately.

Speech threshold audiometry- Tells how loudly words has to be, so you can understand them.

Discrimination- Tells the differences in words and sounds.

tympanists-Tells the pressure in the middle ear.

Auditory brain stem response- This test can tell the differences between the Sensory and Neural hearing loss, it measures nerves impulses in the brain resulting from stimulation of the Auditory Nerve.

electrocardiography- Measures the activity of the cochlea, and the Auditory Nerve.

Treatments are:

Hearing aids- There are two types of hearing aids - Air conduction hearing aids , and Bone conduction hearing aids.

The Air conduction hearing aids - Goes in to the ear canal with a tight seal, and The Bone conduction hearing aids , this hearing aid is used when a person don't have a ear to put it in to.

This is placed on the head behind the ear, it puts sounds through the skill to the inner ear.

There is a cochlear implants-Is for people who can't hear sounds through the hearing aids.

The implants consists of Electrodes inserted into the cochlea and an internal coil implanted in the skull, they are supplemented by an external coil, and a speech processor and a microphone located outside the body- it puts sound waves into the cochlear.

Deafness is hard to deal with, it is like you are shut off from the world , a lot of people don't know how to talk to people that are deaf, you can sign language and lip read also, there are strobes are install in your house one for door bell and one for phone, and there is also a tty phone for the deaf.

Some people stare at you and others excepts you, as you are and try to be your friend.

There are some jobs out there you can do when you are deaf.
