The American Heritage Dictionary defines an organization as something made up of elements with varied functions that contribute to the whole and collective functions. The success of any organization depends on the qualities and capabilities of these elements or people that form its part and parcel. In an organization, being a person in charge of a team and entrusted with certain authority, a Manager has a very prominent and influential role. Apart from excelling in his professional sphere of activity, a successful manager needs to be multi-pronged both in his approach and outlook. While it may not be feasible to describe all the attributes of a successful manager, some of the essentials could be enumerated as below.
In the hierarchical set-up of an organization, while everybody needs to be a team player, a successful manager at the helm of affairs has the upper hand, being a Team Leader, guiding and leading his team to achieve the common goal. This is possible only through the concerted efforts of all the team players. It shall be the endeavour of the Leader to plan and visualize things in advance, and channelize the efforts of one and all in the team effectively, contributing to the set common goal and also to see how best it is achieved within the stipulated time frame. Leading and managing people of different cultures and dispositions is not always an easy task. It is here that motivation plays an important role. A successful Manager, therefore, needs to be not only a good Leader, but a Motivator too.
In the fast evolving world scenario with increased economic opportunities, the growing level of attrition is a cause for concern. This can be remedied to some extent by choosing and recruiting personnel appropriately. It should be emphasized that recruitment is not just browsing through the CVs and comparing the same against the preset job descriptions. It is much more than that. Based on requirements, locate and absorb the proper personnel with the requisite qualifications, skills and exposure; impart the necessary training, guidance etc. and, importantly, attune them to fit in the specific slots. It is inevitable that good elements are encouraged and even rewarded when necessary in order that the best among them are retained and thus continuity is always maintained. This will also help boost morale and as well as productivity. It is also necessary that proper environment be created to ensure and extract the best performance from all the team players.
