The new U.S. sanctions against Iran, is meant to lock Iran's military and financial institutions, and anyone who does business with them out of the American financial system, drew support from top U.S. Senators. The new sanctions are the first time that the U.S. has sought to punish another country's military, there are arguments given that the U.S. action complements diplomatic efforts. Because there is no sign that Iran is going to suspend uranium enrichment, Washington is going to push ahead with drafting a new U.N. resolution on sanctions for late November to increase pressure on Tehran.

President Ahmadinejad remains defiant, having said on more than one occasion that nothing will deter Iran from pursuing its nuclear program, which he maintains is for peaceful energy purposes in one breath and in the next boasts that Israel will one day be wiped off the face of the earth.

Condolezza Rice has accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard of being proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and it's elite al-Quds force of supporting terrorism particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Al quds is a direct reference to the city of Jerusalem, which is one of the holiest sites in Islam and referenced by Muslim militant groups . They are a secretive highly effective core of the Iranian military operation, entrusted with only the most high level and sensitive operations. They have been described to be " the bad guys who have American blood on their hands", and have been involved in numerous terrorist actions and has been providing sophisticated roadside bombs that are the biggest killer of U.S. troops in Iraq. Qassim Suleimani is thought to be their current leader. The unit is thought to be very much a part of the Iranian government, and the Iranian President Ahmadinejad is known to be very close to the al Quds force.

Dr Rice said that the U.S. was still committed to diplomacy to resolved the nuclear stand off, but said that the sanctions were part of a comprehensive policy to confront the threatening behavior of the Iranians Rice described Iran as perhaps the greatest challenge for American security interests in the Middle East and possibly the world
