I have had the great experience of looking at different career paths through my working life and all I can say is that there are so many ways to develop a reputation as a prolific businessman, I would not really know where to begin. However, I believe that in many ways, developing a reputation is going to depend on the industry that you are in.
What I would like to do here is make my own Dave "Top 10" List of the Tips on Developing a Reputation as a Prolific Businessman and then let you decide if: (1) They fit your profile or (2) You know someone who these tips can be useful toward.
1. Be an extrovert rather than an introvert. What does this mean? Basically, be outgoing. Know when to talk, smile and be happy, but do not overdo it.
2. Produce great results. This basically means to get results. Know your product or your business and push it. However, do not push it until the wall can not be moved anymore. When the wall falls and your customer/client has accepted what you have to offer, then deliver upon your promises and continue to impress that customer/client. This will produce repeat business and you will not be the only one who is happy. Your client/customer will be impressed and return for more.
3. Be a Great Listener. Being one who is more of a listener than a talker, will produce results. Know what your customer wants and is expecting. Know right off the bat if the product or service that you have is something that client needs and definitely wants. If you try to throw your product/service over the wall at the client and expect them to like it right away, then you probably lost that customer.
Listen intently. Do not oversell by talking too much. (This comes from one who definitely can be considered too much of a talker and less of a listener).
4. Know Your Product or Service. Know what it is your selling. Be enthusiastic about the product or service. If you are hired on at a job as a salesman or marketer and really do not like the product or service, then believe me, you will not survive and then you most likely better move on and find a product or service that you do like and believe in.
5. Know Your Competition. You have to know the "enemy." You have to know what the other guy is doing to push the same type of product or service. Do your homework/research and follow your competition by learning about him/her through literature. What makes the competition better? What makes them sell the same product or service
