Antidepressants take time to work, they have to build up and be maintained in your system. Usually four to six weeks before you notice any changes, sometimes it can take longer because dosages have to be adjusted if the symptoms have not changed. This can sometimes take up to several weeks to get the antidepressant at the proper dosage. Sometimes a patient may need to try a couple of different medicines to find the right one for them. These medicines must be taken daily, no skipping or stopping the medication unless directed by your physician. Along with the medication it is also helpful to be involved in some type of counseling, single or group, what ever is comfortable for the individual. The patient may try taking up a hobby or doing something they enjoy doing to help work through the depression. Routine follow up visits, along with lab work to make sure the antidepressant is working and giving the patient the relief they are looking for, at times the medicine may need to be adjusted or even another medicine prescribed with the antidepressant to get the results needed to relieve depression. Along with your physician, the patient should have an evaluation with a psychiatrist. They are more qualified to deal with the symptoms and side effects from the depression and antidepressants. Usually the patient keeps up routine visits with the psychiatrist and is monitored with evaluation and lab work. Anytime there is a medicine change there is again a few weeks before the results can be seen or felt by the patient. The stress of our fast paced lives can bring on bouts of depression.
