SUPER CEREALS
What is your favorite cereal of all?
Breakfast cereal really does bring out the child in most of us. Do you love sugar-sweetened cereals? Are you a sucker for Saturday morning television commercials, with their cute cartoon mascots and catchy advertising jingles? Perhaps you are a box-reader, eagerly awaiting the new editions to see whose picture will be on the box of your preferred brand this month. Maybe you just like to dive into a new box of cereal, hunting for the promised prize.
Personally, I have a few long-time favorites. See if you agree.
CHEERIOS
Yep, this still tops my list. Of course, you can now find about a dozen varieties of this traditional stand-by. I nearly always pick the multi-grain Cheerios. Gee, at least I can pretend I am eating healthy fitness food, as I crunch on this childhood favorite.
After a decade of cereal-free living, I rediscovered Cheerios when my oldest child began teething. We shared this one together, mostly while waiting in the pediatrician's office for periodic checkups, riding in the car or cruising through grocery aisles. (Yes, we opened the box, but we always paid for it at the checkout, along with our other purchases.)
KIX
Someone once told me that Kix contained less sugar than all the other sweet and crunchy breakfast cereals. I became a believer. Who can resist those crunchy little spheres? (I like to eat Kix dry, right out of the box.)
HONEYCOMB
This "honey of an oat" cereal, as the old jingle called it, is best consumed as a bedtime snack. If we are out of ice cream, I settle for Honeycomb. (Probably, the ice cream would be more nutritious and less caloric, but who's asking?)
CORN POPS
Candied popcorn without the hulls, what could be better? Here's another breakfast cereal that's really better for a late-night treat. Also, it's better straight from the box!
CAPTAIN CRUNCH
Who doesn't love a pirate? OK, so the Captain is not exactly Captain Jack Sparrow. In fact, he's not really even a pirate. But we can pretend, right? Captain Crunch is sugar-loaded binge food, but it must be consumed immediately after pouring the milk. Soggy cereal simply isn't worth the calories!
CRACKLIN' OAT BRAN
Any cereal I can share with my horse is not half bad. Here's a secret: I keep a stash of Cracklin' Oat Bran in my tack trunk at the stables, just in case either one of us gets hungry. Heck, if it's good enough for him, I like it too.
SUGAR STUPOR
Cereal . . . it's not just a breakfast food! It's an anytime sweet and crunchy fix.
