There is a certain comfort in having a complete physical examination once a year and finding out that everything checks out just fine. It bodes well for the future and is also an indication that the individual is living healthy and enjoying an exceptional quality of life.
Now if only more people could come to that realization and take control of their own health and well-being. It's not enough just to have a medical insurance plan that allows you to get any number of prescription drugs to gloss over underlying medical conditions that could easily be treated if discovered in time.
For instance, having your cholesterol levels checked once a year will make it so much easier to deal with indications of high bad cholesterol. Tests can warn your doctor that levels have risen since the year previous, and when discovered early, controlling rising cholesterol may just be a matter of making a few diet changes and increasing fitness activities. If allowed to get out of hand over a number of years, then not only will prescription drugs become the only alternative, but risk of heart disease will rise substantially.
Everyone should have a full range of blood tests done on an annual basis. There is so much information available to a doctor just by reading the results of your tests. In some cases, a simple blood test may me all it takes to indicate an abnormality in red and white blood cells that could indicate cancer. By having your blood tested annually, you have an excellent chance of detecting any number of medical conditions in the earliest stages.
The same can be said for women having breast examinations and men having their prostate checked every year. It's all about early detection and not giving disease a chance to take over the body.
Seeing a heart specialist every few years is also a great idea. A full examination might take less than an hour, but will enable the physician to detect any cardiovascular abnormalities or better yet, give the patient a clean bill of health.
Dentist should not be forgotten either. An annual check by your dentist can help not only prevent cavities, but will also give the dentist a chance to check the health of your gums. In some cases, the state of your teeth and gums might be indicative of other medical issues that may have to be addressed.
Really, it takes little time out of the average person's day to make the effort to have a series of medical tests done on a regular basis. It's well worth it, especially if those few hours could ultimately add years to a person's life.
