Date rape is one of the most despicable crimes in our society. In an attempt to further a relationship with an acquaintance, we often feel open and trusting enough to let our guards down with the seemingly "nice" person we've known for a short while. The co-worker that brings you fresh coffee every morning couldn't possibly have a mean bone in his body, right? WRONG!
Our parents have always warned us about the dangers of strangers. We are taught that it is never safe to go anywhere alone with someone we don't know. How is it then, as we grow older we feel a bit "untouchable" when it comes to our risks of becoming victimized?
Date rape is a calculated crime. These types of rapists meticulously plan their attacks and create almost an "art form," if you will, out of their strategy in luring their unsuspecting victims. The date rapist is a manipulator; very savvy in convincing their victims that not only can they be trusted, but that the sexual encounter was consensual. Many women who have been raped by an acquaintance are left feeling guilty because they believe that they lead their rapist on. This type of misconception and shame is what keeps these types of predators on the streets with no fear of consequence.
However, taking a few precautionary measures can drastically decrease your chances of falling victim of such an insidious crime.
UNTIL YOU TRULY "KNOW" SOMEONE:
*Take separate cars and meet in public settings
*Bring a friend(s) with you
*Never go alone to an acquaintances home
*Never invite an "acquaintance" to your home
*Do not get overly intoxicated
*Never leave your food or drink unattended (Common date rape drugs like Rohypnol are indiscernible by taste or smell)
Predators depend on vulnerability, never allow yourself to be in a compromising position. Be cautious and have your wits at all times. Be aware of the warning signs; if someone is overly persuasive in getting you alone, keep your guard up. A true friend or companion will have patience and respect your right to caution.
For more information on date rape drugs and other rape prevention resources, you can also visit: http://www.4woman.gov/FAQ/rohypnol.htm. This is a very informative site and offers a wealth of information on the most commonly used date rape drugs and their side effects. We can stay a step ahead of these vicious predators by educating ourselves and taking a few basic preventative measures. Don't be the next victim of date rape; educate yourself, use caution and play it safe.
