Beginner's guide to Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is an application that gives you the ability to record and manipulate data, including statistical analysis, by entering text labels as well as numerical values into the electronic spreadsheet and then extract the desired calculations and other results and present it in numerous ways.

The ability to use electronic spreadsheet software will help you both professionally and personally. By providing the structure in which to work, Excel can increase the efficiency and accuracy in your business as well as your personal affairs. Excel's ability to perform and automate complex calculations saves time and decreases, or even eliminates, the possibility of error.

SPREADSHEET

The spreadsheet is the entire "file" that you save when you create a document with Excel. When you start a new spreadsheet, Excel automatically creates three worksheets or workbooks. Excel has the ability to communicate between worksheets that are part of a spreadsheet. You can jump between worksheets by using the worksheet tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet window. Each worksheet is made up of columns (labeled with letters) and rows (labeled numerically). These worksheets have the ability of performing rapid and accurate calculations on groups of interrelated numbers. Using Excel you can:

1.Organize information rapidly and accurately. With the proper data and formulas, Excel calculates and recalculates your data automatically.

2.Recalculating automatically. Fixing errors in Excel is easy. When you find a mistake and correct the entry, Excel automatically recalculates and updates all related data.

3.Keep track of the effect that changing one data point has on related data. You can postulate changes that may occur in the future and see how they could change the results of your calculations. A feature called What-If Analysis.

4.Display graphs and charts based upon your real data. Excel allows you to display numeric data graphically in the form of charts that are automatically updated as the data changes. Charts are easily generated, making the relationships among data easier to understand.

5.Complete exceptional statistical analysis. If the statistical analysis formulas included in Excel are not complex enough, add-ons are available for the most complex of statistical computation.

GETTING AROUND

To effectively use Excel you must be able to move between cells in the workspace. To do this you can either use the mouse or the keyboard depending on your
