When you have your first high school reunion, just attending the reunion can be stressful in and of itself. For my class' 10-year high school reunion (which took place in 2003), I not only was an attendee, I was also on the planning committee. So for me, the stress of the reunion came months before the actual event.
It all started in early 2003, when I was beginning to wonder if my class would even be having the 10-year reunion, since I hadn't heard anything about one coming up. I had almost gotten to the point of trying to put something together on my own, when I saw a messageboard post from our class president at Classmates.com. Our class president was looking for volunteers to help plan the reunion. Since I had just been to my husband's 10-year high school reunion a few months earlier, I thought I would have some background on what needed to be done for a reunion. So I replied to our class president and volunteered my services.
My first responsibility was to track down our classmates. I set up an e-mail address for our class through Yahoo! Mail, and also signed up for a one-year paid membership at Classmates.com. I used the messaging feature at Classmates to contact our classmates listed there to acquire contact information, as well as to solicit more volunteers to help plan the event. I also used Reunion.com to locate classmates that weren't at Classmates.com.
After that, I had the responsibility to set a date and find a location to hold the big Saturday evening event. Since I lived 300 miles away from where we graduated from high school, the internet and long-distance phone calls became very important tools for me to get reunion planning accomplished. In late February/early March 2003, I got a location and date secured... with the reunion scheduled to take place about four months later. It wasn't a lot of time, but I knew that if myself, along with the other people on the reunion committee, could pull something off.
My next assignment was to research DJs and hire one for the Saturday evening event. Our senior class president worked on the Saturday afternoon event, and I also had to contact our school district about setting up a tour of the high school for late Friday afternoon. Our high school was remodeled right after we graduated, so it made sense to set up a tour of the newer building. I also had to make arrangements with a pizza place in town for the group to gather after the tour. I also had to write up press releases to
