Do I like sweets? I believe the word 'like' is a bit weak for my feelings towards sweets. I have told my wife, "I love you, almost as much as ice cream." If you ask her, she would probably tell you, that is a fair assessment. I say it jokingly of course but sometimes I know she wonders. You see I am a diabetic and since the doctor told me I had to cut my sugar intake, I quit seeing him, no really, it is about wanting what I can not have. I love to eat and I love to try just about any type of food.
My son learned at an early age that you did not give Dad candy to hold. Even though I offered to buy him another bag of M&M's, Skittles, Gummy bears, and such as these, he always wanted the bag that I had just emptied. I could never understand this, but those are my child's ways. I couldn't help it the candy called to me. I could not resist the temptation.
Some of my best memories are of sweets. My grandma would pick the blueberries, from the bushes in the garden and make Blueberry Yum Yum. A delectable treat made with a homemade crust, homemade blueberry pie filling and whipped cream. It was put in a 9x11 casserole dish and it lasted all of two milliseconds. She would also send me Black Walnut fudge in the mail. The walnuts were from a tree in the front yard. I would lie awake at night wondering when she would send me some more.
My grandpa (who was also a diabetic) would take me to the store and ask me if I wanted any candy for the ride home. Of course, I would say yes, and he would eat half of it on the way home. I remember getting mad if I thought he ate to much of my candy. Curious enough at the time, we never saved any for grandma nor told her about our feast. Oh but I understand now.
On Friday's my stepfather would bring home a Snickers bar for my brother and I to halve. You would have thought I had just won the largest lottery jackpot in the history of lottery jackpots. I loved those days. I lived for those days.
When I lived in Germany as a child, the bus stop for school was next to a German candy store. If I didn't have any money, I would go in and look, just to dream, and to see if the owner had any new candies. When I did have money, I would spend every last pfenning I had on coca cola gummies, sour gummies, gummy bears, cherry gummies, frog gummies (with the white marsh mellow bellies), gummy worms and every other gummy I thought might appeal to my taste buds.
Do I like sweets? I love sweets. My preoccupation with sweets drives my friends and family crazy, especially my wife. I joke about how I need or just had an ice cream, candy bar or cookie and they scream at me as if I just killed a cute little puppy. I understand that I can not have the sweets, but it is just plain fun to aggravate them.
