Does Diet matter

"You are what you eat." We hear this saying frequently, but I think there is a lot of truth in it. The choices you make on a daily basis have a great deal of impact on your health. These choices influence your health in many positive ways. Eating certain kinds of food can assist you in managing your health in a way that helps you to feel your very best, both physically and emotionally.

Diet can significantly affect depression. According to the article, "Question: I've Heard A lot About Food Affecting Mood," by Dr. Ronald Pies, the lack of many nutrients in the diet of a person with depression can have an impact on their mood. Pies concluded that, "Your diet lacks key nutrients." In that case, patients may benefit from a diet specifically designed for people with depression. Diets that lack vitamins, amino acids, minerals and fat often contribute to depression.

Diet often impacts the severity of symptoms for people with arthritis as well. As a result of many surgeries, I have osteoarthritis in my hips. Due to this, my pain is more severe during periods of cold and damp weather. In these times, it is extremely beneficial for people with arthritis to increase their intake of Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish and nuts are just two of the many foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. When I am in pain, I often experience temporary relief of my discomfort after I have increased my intake of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Did you know that caffeine can ease the severity, frequency, and duration of a headache? For several reasons, I have headaches often. Foods rich in caffeine such as Coke and chocolate often help to ease my headaches. This occurs by releasing pain relieving enzymes in my brain. Consuming caffeine usually helps to relieve my headaches more effectively than taking over-the-counter medications.

Making simple changes in your diet is increasingly more effective in improving health than traditional medication. I have found that by making simple changes in my diet, I have more energy and am sick less often. Changes in diet can have a lasting positive impact on the quality of your life. However, these changes are not appropriate for everyone. It is important to consult your doctor in determining if they are right for your specific needs and situation. Considering these options is worth the effort. Simple changes in diet often result in better health and well-being.
