The best way to save on your wedding cake is to purchase it from a smaller bakery, or even a supermarket like Publix. Don't be fooled by the fancy wedding cakes at expensive bakeries. Very similar cakes can be made at a fraction of the price! Instead of getting an intricately designed cake, you can go for a simpler cake, decorated with colored icing and perhaps small pearls or silver balls.
If you know you are having a small wedding party, do not purchase a large, three-tired cake! You will probably only need a smaller cake with two tiers. Also, do not opt for lavish flavors and fruit fillings or expensive chocolate, go basic, such as angel's food cake with vanilla frosting.
Another way to say on the cake is to purchase your cake topper at a party supply store instead of a wedding store. It will be a fraction of the price, but you still get a large selection! IF you go to a wedding store, they may convince you to purchase a much more expensive topper, so stay away!
Just because you are looking to save money, doesn't mean you can't get a nice cake. But make sure the baker details the cost for every item so that you can get rid of a detail or two if it gets costly. If getting a wedding cake from a bakery proves too expensive, try the catering company that will provide the food for your wedding. They may also be able to get you a great deal, or even provide the cake along with desserts!
I would recommend against baking the cake yourself! That is THE LAST thing you want to do before your wedding day! Only accept the offer of having a cake made by a friend if they've done it before and have pictures to show you, and have a reputation at being a cake-making expert! Otherwise, you might end up with a lopsided wedding cake!
