My Adoption
I shall never forget the day that I officially became a Gifford. It was August 23rd 2005. I was just twelve years old at the time. It was a glorious day with the sun shining, almost as if it was congratulating me, and there was not a cloud to be seen.
I awoke that morning to discover that my dad was making my favorite breakfast, banana caramel crepes. I could taste them in my mind as he cooked them- and the whole house smelled wonderful. I greedily ate them and drank my orange juice. I was like one of those fancy high end vacuum cleaners sucking them down.
After breakfast I took a nice hot shower as my mother ironed my best shirt and pantes. They were lovely and warm when I put them on. They reminded me of putting on a cozy pair of pajamas fresh from the dryer on a cold evening.
Just before we left the house my father called me into his office. I was a little nervous as I am not usually allowed in there. He presented me with a box. it was not just any box it was a watch box. I almost got teary eyed when I opened it for inside was a bright yellow Festina sports watch. I had been eyeing it up for months at the mall- and I knew it was expensive. I felt the watch strap which was a very softy and supple rubber. I put the watch on and felt very proud.
Finally before leaving I made sure that our dogs had water and the rabbit had food then we drove to the city of Orange courthouse. When we arrived, I found that my grand dad was waiting for us. That is my dad's dad, grand dad Ernie. He always carries a pocket knife, and he hid it in some grass before going inside; as it would have been confiscated.
As we entered we had to go through a security check, which is a , lot like getting on a plane. Everyone was very serious. The inside of the courthouse was incredibly big. Standing in the middle of the lobby you could look up at all the different floors. We are got into the elevator and began to go up to our floor. I have to admit I felt as if butterflies as big as mice were rattling inside my tummy. At our floor we got off and we met with our lawyer. He had a coffee stain on his shirt- I will always remember that for some reason. All around us were lots of kids, some babies and some teenagers, all dressed up and chatting with their own lawyers. Our attorney went into the court and got our number. Then we all sat on a wooden bench and waited.
As we waited the other families went in one by one. There be a few minutes
