How to get more out of your PC hardware

With our increasingly fast-paced society, very few people have the time to think about their PC's components. Many PC users are rather technologically illiterate and would much rather not think about the internal workings of their computers, focusing more on the desktop features which they have become familiar with, like the internet or various chat programs. While these users may notice that overtime their computers run at slower speeds, they may not be sure why. The following suggestions will help you get more out of your PC hardware by extending its longevity and improving its efficiency.

1. Maintenance. Be sure to schedule routine disk scans and disk de-fragmentation periods. You can configure your settings to allow these programs to run at night or whenever you are away from your computer.

2. Take preventative measures. Anti-spyware software and other Anit-Virus programs are crucial to keeping your computer safe from hackers and other online security threats such as viruses and Trojans. Spyware is a leading contributing factor to the declining pace of typically fast PCs, so taking precautions can prevent you from having to spend hours on the aforementioned routine maintenance scans.

3. Cooling. Most average computer users head on over to Best Buy or a local computer store and pick up huge boxes that contain everything "all-in-one," go home, set it up, and never think twice about what goes on inside the PC tower. However, regardless of your home or office's state of cleanliness, dust accumulates inside the tower on an almost constant basis. This dust can and will heat up your computer by clogging the internal fans that typically keep it cool. To avoid crashing, keep your computer at a cooler temperature by cleaning the inside of the case regularly and storing it in an area where it will receive plenty of cool air.

4. Upgrade. Purchasing additional memory for your computer is also an easy way to get the most out of your hardware. This simple upgrade can significantly boost your computer's speed. Be sure your PC's drivers are also upgraded. Manufacturer specific drivers are often more effective than common Window's drivers. These drivers and other tools can generally be found on the manufacturer's website and are typically easily downloaded.
