Question: What do baseball fans who like home runs and chiropractors who treat pitchers' necks have in common?
Answer: Both groups would be thrilled to learn about the Major League records for most home runs hit in a single game.
MOST HOME RUNS HIT IN A SINGLE GAME - INDIVIDUAL PLAYER
Only fifteen players in Major League history have hit four home runs in a single game. The first was Bobby Lowe of the Boston Beaneaters, in 1894; the most recent, Carlos Delgado, in 2003, while playing with the Toronto Blue Jays. Twelve of the players accomplished the feat in a nine inning game, and three took advantage of extra innings.
Of the top ten career home run hitters of all-time, only Willie Mays - fourth on the list - hit four in one game. Mays, Ed Delahanty, Lou Gehrig, Chuck Klein and Mike Schmidt are Hall of Fame members who had remarkable four homer games.
MOST HOME RUNS HIT IN A SINGLE GAME - ONE TEAM
The Toronto Blue Jays hold the American League and Major League records for home runs hit in one game, hitting ten on September 14, 1987 against the Baltimore Orioles, in Toronto. Catcher Mike Whitt led the Blue Jays with three home runs.
The National League record rests with nine homers hit by the Cincinnati Reds on September 4, 1999, off the hometown Philadelphia Phillie pitching staff. Eight different batters hit one out of the park for the Reds; only catcher Ed Taubensee managed to hit two.
It's not difficult to imagine the extreme moods of the home team fans attending the two record setting games. The Blue Jays, in front of their continually cheering fans in Exhibition Stadium, plummeted the Orioles by an 18 to 3 score. The Reds, on the road in Veterans Stadium, played for a likely gradually diminishing, and near silent, crowd in Philadelphia, as they blasted their way to a 22 to 3 mauling of the Phillies.
MOST HOME RUNS HIT IN A SINGLE GAME - BOTH TEAMS
The Major League record for most home runs hit in a single game by both teams seems modest, considering the record for one team is ten. On two occasions, in 1995 and 2002, the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox, in American League games, combined to hit twelve home runs. The National League record in eleven and it has been done four times; the Chicago Cubs have been involved in three of the four games, one in 1979, the most recent.
