Having to buy a fax machine for the home, just to get the occasional fax through from the office can be an expensive and unnecessary thing to do. Unbeknown to a lot of people you can now receive and send faxes through your computer on the Internet. There are several companies that offer fairly similar services in dong this, although the largest that i am aware of is E-Fax. They offer free accounts as well so that if it is only an occasional memo or update that you need to get sent through, it can all be free.

There are also business accounts with many companies that will let you send faxes to anywhere in the world. These are at a cost usually, but if it is a case of having to send a lot of faxes, it can be a lot more convenient to be able to to it from a computer rather then having to find a fax machine every time. This is particularly the case in a large business, which might have for example 200 computers on their premises with Internet access, but only 20 fax machines.

A lot of on line fax companies work on the premise of buying credits, with which to send your faxes. These are generally sold by the page. For example 1 page of fax might cost you 10 cents. If you get the business accounts however you can usually get this a lot cheaper. The basic rule being that the more credit you buy and the more faxes you sent, then the cheaper you can get them. Although this is true with most things in business and is just another example of economies of scale.

Some companies even offer a monthly unlimited account. Where by you pay a monthly fee and can send as many faxes as you want to. This is obviously a lot cheaper for very large businesses that send a lot of faxes everyday. As well as the fact that it can save on paper and the fax machines purchasing and maintaining costs themselves.

The faxes themselves are then sent through email, and you will receive a conformation email to let you know that your fax has been successfully printed and received at the other end. This allows you to be a lot more mobile when dealing with fax only suppliers for example, as you can make orders and adjustments while on the train in the morning, or when you are at home later on i the evening.

Most fax programs work just like a real fax machine would. They generally come up as an option under fax machines/printers when you have completed a document. They can also be used with pretty much any application that a printer or fax machine can be used with as well.

As Internet faxes overtake conventional fax machines in terms of usage, there are larger companies that are getting involved as well. Many Internet or phone line service providers now offer packages which contain fax, Internet and phone calls. These can be very useful in running a business as all these services are covered in one expenditure.
