Satire: Fate

The Big Story never published

She sits at the bay, enjoying the sand at her feet, as she watches the ships come in from their cruise adventures from far away places. Lacy was wasting her lunch hour, away, taking all the scenery in she could, when she noticed something unusual at the shore. It was close and her first instinct, was it may be an alligator, but no, it was not. The sea gulls started attacking the thing as it was swept up closer.

Slowly, Lacy walked up to see what it may be. She was horrified to find a young woman's face covered in long hair and sea weed. Lacy screamed, attracting the others in the park. Someone, Lacy was not sure who called the police. The police arrived promptly along with the coroner.

Lacy was pushed aside to gather her thoughts because the police needed to speak with her. She was in shock. She trembled and stared at the bay. She remembered just moments before, admiring the peace and solitude of it all. She was wishing for time to go back, maybe she would have chosen to stay at home and worked on her story instead. She wish she could.

The police break up their discussion with the coroner as he packs the body to go. A policeman, who identified himself as Officer Lehman said, "I have to ask you a few questions, mam." She did not react. He repeated himself. Lacy nodded her head.

"Where were you, when you found the body?" he asked. Lacy pointed directly at the spot. He took notes of the area. "What made you suspicious there was a body?" She told of the sea gulls which caught her attention, how they were flying around the top of the water, then; the body. Next, "Do you know this victim, a Susan Biller?" he asked.

Lacy brought herself back from her thoughts and asked him to repeat the question. He did. Lacy said, "No, she did know a Susan Biller, but she has not seen her in years." The officer asked, "When was the last time she saw Ms. Biller?" Lacy replied, "Eight years ago high school. I am afraid we were only passing acquaintances then. We were never friends. She was in one grade, I was in the other. It could not be the same girl." Then Lacy remembered the face. Then she said, "I did see her in the water, it was Susan, I suppose. But why would she be here?"

The policeman continued to jot down his notes. He did not answer her. He did get Lacy's name, occupation: writer, marital status: married, but husband, Frank is out of town, on a business trip in Las Vegas. She gave him the hotel name. "He will not be back
