A Hopeful Beginning

The morning came quickly. I woke up before the colors of the sun had appeared in the sky. The U-Haul truck had been packed the night before with all my worldly possessions and I was prepared to leave California, the only home I knew. It was so final; the ending of one life and the beginning of a new one.

I said my goodbyes the day before to all but one person. We had months to prepare ourselves but now that the time had come we knew it was going to be the toughest day of our lives. It was to be the day my husband and I ended our marriage. We agreed that we wouldn't say goodbye, but rather, we would say good luck and best wishes for a successful life. As I drove away I didn't look back, I looked forward.

I knew that many aspects of the move would be difficult and painful. The door on my past needed to be closed. I wanted to begin again with a new outlook. Driving across California gave me time for a final reflection on the past. The further I drove, the more distant my past became. I looked forward to the unlimited opportunities I knew could be waiting for me. My pain turned to hope. I began believing in myself, in my plans, and in my future.
