The history of marjuana use

by bob-bob

Marijuana

Freedom of speech is a luxury that Americans enjoy everyday. But it is not without its controversies and people voicing their opinions without getting all of the facts beforehand. The argument of marijuana is one of the current topics in which people speak from fear and incorrect information. Marijuana is currently categorized as a hallucinogenic drug that has no medical benefits, also know as a Schedule 1 drug by the United States government. The problem however, is that more research is coming out that marijuana does have medical benefits, But instead of assisting and accepting research that has been done the federal government has dug in their heels and are not open to any research that suggests that marijuana is anything less than evil. Even states in which the people have voted on and the state governments have passed laws to allow marijuana to used for medical use, the federal government has stepped in and declared that the federal law against marijuana supercedes any state law.

Marijuana has a long history that goes back much further than the beginning of the United States. It has been used as a drug for what we now call "recreational use" and also for medical purposes. Even today the medical benefits that marijuana is starting to show covers a wide spectrum of disease, even one that has been a quandary for ages, epilepsy. But why does marijuana cause bad effects in some and help others deal with their illness? The answers are found in how marijuana works on the brain.
Marijuana comes from a plant named Cannabis sativa and is also known as the hemp plant, because of the fibers that it produces. It is a very resilient plant that can grow quickly up to 20 feet tall and can be grown anywhere in the world because different types of weather does not effect it and it has very few natural pests that eat it. There are female and male plants with the female plant being the one that is concentrated on. A female plant produces the seeds and resin that are sought out after by people. The seeds can be used for food and oil and the resin along with the flowers and leaves are used for making the medicinal and intoxicating drugs (Earleywine, 3). The hemp that is created from the stalks of both the male and female plants have been used for fibers, fabric, paper and food since 8000 B.C.
Marijuana has over 400 different chemical compounds, 66 of which are unique just to marijuana and are known as cannabinoids. The best known is THC
