There's an ultimate priority that ought to be at the top of everyone's agendas and if it isn't somethings terribly wrong; that is, global warming.
Scientists are agreed that Global warming isn't a debate but a fact. They claim that in 20 to 50 years the planet will be so damaged that aside from many other devastating outcomes the world's population will begin to starve.
The effects of starvation are that the body begins to eat itself in order to survive; it breaks down muscle mass and other tissues for energy and to fuel the heart, nervous systems and keep other vital systems going. Atrophy, or the stomach wasting away lessen hunger because the stomach feels less empty.
Vitamin deficiency is common and causes anemia, beriberi, pellagra and scurvy which may lead to diarrhea, skin rashes, edema and heart failure. Irritability and lethargy are often results of these.
Diseases are common and often fungi grow in the throat which makes swallowing excruciating. A lack of energy means that it's more and more difficult to move or take part in anything. Dehydration occurs because starvation victims are too weak to sense thirst and this causes painfully cracked skin. Eventually the starving person doesn't have the energy to eat and even if they can the stomach may rupture if too much is consumed.
When Bob Geldof was in Africa during Live Aid he witnessed the sight of a starving three year old boy, who looked only months old, excreting his intestines as he watched. When Geldof talked with Mother Theresa she said to him "I can't do what you do, and you can't do what I do but we both should do it!"
Nevertheless It's possibly too late to avoid global catastrophe and the ultimate extinction of mankind and all other life on the planet. Even if we all ceased from destroying the ozone layer immediately so much damage has been done that the carbon will keep rising a small amount.
The scientists in a documentary I watched last night claimed that the earth could look like our sister planet Venus by the end of the century and be uninhabitable. Venus' atmosphere is comprised of carbon dioxide because it doesn't possess a carbon cycle with which to lock carbon back into rocks and its surface and no organic life to absorb it in biomass. We're currently annihilating our carbon cycle!
I've come to the conclusion that I'm comfortable with the thought of my own death as long as the human race survives me. I refuse to starve and watch my planet die with me without a fight and I suggest that we all contribute to attempting to rescue the earth and thus our future generations by using less energy and reducing our carbon footprints.
We can buy organic food which is actually less expensive to produce and produces high yields even though official propaganda claims otherwise and those of us with gardens and land can grow our own food and herbs for medicinal purposes. We must take our survival into our own hands because our leaders are leading us to our deaths and ultimately the global extinction of all species.
There are websites that will help us to do this. Perhaps our combined efforts will surprise the scientists several years from now because we might slow global warming down enough to survive. Or am I being an optimist?
