It was just another summer day. My oldest son and his wife and my grandson had been at the beach that week so I wasn't babysitting for them. It was hot, actually it was the first day of summer, June 21,2007. My youngest son had fallen asleep on the couch the night before and I had just let him sleep there. My husband was at work so I really had nothing planned to do that day but cleaning up the house.
I was drinking coffee at the dining room table, thinking about my family that day and once again I was thanking God that we were all well and safe, you see my second oldest son had just came home from Iraq after serving a year there in the Army.
My daughter called me just to say hello, she does that everyday. We talked for a few minutes and then she said well Mom gotta go the baby is up. Just then my son walked into the room and asked for some scrambled eggs and I said teasing him," Don't you think at twenty-one you could scramble your own eggs and give your old Mom a break?" He said well I guess since you are so old and decreped I'll fix you some eggs.
My youngest son was the only child we had living at home, he had broke up with his girlfriend and had moved back home several months earlier. He had lived away from home for almost two years and I was glad to have him back home. We talked while we ate. We talked about his job he had been laid off from and how the following day he was going to take his driver's test so he could go back to work. We talked about the new girl in his life and he told me he was seriously thinking about asking her to be his girl. About that time the phone rang and it was my son's best friend, it was his birthday and he wanted my son to go out and celebrate with him and another one of his friends.
He told me his plans and I reminded him that his Dad wanted some help with the grass that evening, he said "Awe Mom come on, we're just goin' swimming and I'll be back early cause' I've got a date, tell Dad not to be mad." I told him to go ahead and go but I didn't like the idea of where they were going swimming because of the current and the rocks, he said he wasn't a little kid and he would be careful, he was always careful.
His buddy came and they got ready to leave. He asked me for some money, all I had in my purse was three dollars, I gave it to him and told him to be careful because swimming and drinking didn't mix. He picked up his backpack and started towards the door and I ask him again what
