On The Move
As 2006 comes to an end, baseball fans look towards to spring training for the 2007 season. This is the first chance for teams to introduce their newest acquisitions who were brought in with the intentions to hopefully take the team to the playoffs. Many players have been on the move during this off season, giving various teams different looks all together, while giving some players a new hope in a new situation. Here are the top ten moves that have occurred during the off season thus far:
10: Maybe the move that took the biggest chance this off season was that of the Texas Rangers. After trading closer Francisco Cordero last season to acquire outfielder Carlos Lee (who you will see later on this list), the Rangers were looking to fill that open position. With a huge upside, but plagued with injuries, Eric Gagne left the Dodgers and signed with the Rangers to hopefully become the dominant closer he once was in Los Angeles. (The Rangers took another shot by signing controversial slugger Sammy Sosa to a minor league contract.)
9: The Seattle Mariners have a very intriguing lineup now. Already with hitting machine Ichiro Suzuki, power hitting first baseman Richie Sexson, as well as power hitting third baseman Adrian Beltre, the Mariners have acquired two more pieces to add to their puzzle. Jose Vidro arrived from the Washington Nationals in a trade, and will give the Mariners a switch hitting designated hitter who can hit for average, and hopefully bat second and move Ichiro into scoring position. Vidro also has a little bit of power. Also from the Nationals came free agent outfielder Jose Guillen. Guillen has had his share of anger problems, but kept under control can be a very valuable power hitter. The also brought in starrting pitcher Horacio Ramirez from the Braves.
8: Instead of re-signing outfielder Cliff Floyd, or giving the job to supposed heir apparent Lastings Milledge, the Mets chose to sign veteran outfielder Moises Alou. Alou is a very streaky power hitter who has a few years left in him as long as he can stay healthy through out the season.
7: To upgrade their shaky the lineup, the Red Sox signed J.D. Drew to help with their RBI's. Batting with Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz in the lineup, Drew should be able to contribute with no problem. Again, Drew needs to stay healthy to provide any support to the Red Sox efforts. The Red Sox also took a major chance by signing Japanese pitcher Daisuke
