Could everybody benefit from ADHD medication? Well, I am sure they could, just as everybody might benefit from doing a line of cocaine now and then or maybe shooting up a little crystal meth! Sure, why not? I hope you have realized that I am saying that in a very sarcastic way. Stimulants are very addicting. The only difference between ADHD amphetamines and street amphetamines, is that they are legal and the others are not.
A very large percentage of the population has an addictive personality. Many people can't quit smoking. When I am working many and long hours I consume huge amounts of coffee. Why do we do this? Because it makes it easier to have the energy to get through a tough day. Maybe popping a small dose of Concerta every day would be helpful and rev you up, but that is not the purpose of the drug. When you give stimulants to ADHD children they calm down. They are no longer hyper and flying from couch to couch and climbing on tables. They are able to focus on tasks better, because they are not distracted by everything that is within their visual radius. People are not given ADHD medication to give them more energy and make them feel high.
I find it appalling that anyone would think that everyone could benefit from amphetamines. If you feel that way, let me point you to the ghetto and where you can get the street version. Further more, many parents that don't monitor their children taking their medication well, have kids that are selling them to other kids for a nice price and the other kids crush them and snort them. The kids buying them don't have ADHD. They buy them to get high!
ADHD can be diagnosed on a brain scan and the positive changes in brain activity when the ADHD person receives the stimulant. Normal people will not show that. Normal people would just be abusing a drug that has some very powerful consequences. These drugs are not like popping an aspirin. I will be honest, I took one of my daughter's 36mg Concerta, and I was sorry. I shook like I had 20 cups of coffee. I became fidgety and could not think of anything else except what a stupid idea that was to try it out. My daughter is just the opposite.
I really don't even know how to conclude this article. I have heard the pros and cons from psychiatrists and I stand firm. You take medication for the purpose it was designed. If you drink large amounts of coffee and smoke alot, you might want to undergo a thorough testing to see if you are ADD or ADHD, as many people that have gone misdiagnosed self medicate. You also might want to consider your general health practices: Do you eat healthy, get regular exercise, and adequate sleep? There are studies in the news every day that define the general population as falling short from all three of those important activities to health. Don't be fooled. The true ADD or ADHD person will still be ADD/ADHD even if they meet and exceed those standards of health. So while you might benefit from an ADHD medication to mask your poor health habits, you might as well do a line of Cocaine instead-same thing!
