Thoughts on the Carolina Panthers 2007 offseason

My thoughts and opinions on the 2007 offseason for the Carolina Panthers is that they had some adequate moves and some insufficient moves. For example, by trading away Defensive Tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets, the Panthers made some salary cap room and in return they got a third and fifth round pick in the draft. So overall, I think it was an okay trade. What I was partially disappointed with, was the release of Middle Line backer Dan Morgan, because I followed him a lot and I even have his jersey. The biggest reason why Carolina released him is because he was injured much too often and averaged less than five starts during the past few seasons.

I thought cutting former Houston Texan quarterback David Carr was a great move. After his awful 07 season as a backup and replacement for the injured Jake Delhomme, who went out in week three with an elbow injury against the Falcons. At the end of the season Carolina was finally fed up and put in Matt Moore in place of Carr.

Four other big signings and releases were the cutting of center Justin Hartwig to give former USC Trojan center Ryan Kalil a good shot at the job since he's going to be competing with Geoff Hangartner for the starting position. Also bringing back wide receiver Mushin Muhhamad from the Chicago Bears to be once again a nice compliment to Steve Smith. Another great one is the signing of former Cincinnati Bengal Line Backer Landon Johnson, who is going to be a nice addition to the defense. Johnson is going to get better and better by playing with Julius Peppers who is arguable the best defensive end in the game.

A very big move, was the release of running back Deshaun Foster who later signed with the San Francisco 49ers. This means that Deangelo Williams will be getting most of the carries this year and he'll be sharing very little with Nick Goings and Labrandon Toefield. The Panthers have also had some big releases and signings along with some other minor releases and signings which could have some impact on this team in 2008. Obviously Carolina still has a heck of away to go to turn their 7-9 record into a winning one and it will all start with the NFL draft on April 26 and 27 with their 10 picks.
