When someone hits your dog

There are people in this world who truly do not understand why it is wrong to strike an animal. Ignorance, misinformation and fear are all contributing factors in how people will treat a dog. Prevention is a key factor in protecting your dog from these poor souls.

1) Teach your dog proper greeting etiquette. They sit and wait for someone to pet them instead of charging and jumping. Your dog probably doesn't mean anything by it however some people have been bitten before and will strike out of fear. If your dog has manners the chances of them being hurt are greatly decreased.

2) Ask before allowing your dog to greet a stranger or even an acquaintance. You don't know who may decide to hit the dog when greeted in an exuberant fashion. Out of respect for them and concern for your dog don't assume everyone wants to meet your dog.

3) Avoid people who you have seen treat animals in an inappropriate manner. If they treat their animals badly they will not think twice about doing it to your dog. Watch a person's body language and run interference if you think they are iffy'.

If you were unable to prevent a confrontation and your dog has been punched or kicked there are some simple things to do. Above all remember to stay calm! Getting upset will escalate the situation and can lead to worse behavior from the aggressor.

1) Make sure your dog is physically ok. Check for scratches, cuts or tender spots.

2) Get a house number, plate number or take a picture of the person with your phone. (applies to vehicular hitting as well).

3) Very calmly ask Why?' and then remove yourself from the situation or call the police.

4) Press civil charges. Getting a criminal conviction is fairly hard, however you can receive reimbursement for medical bills through civil court.

Always remember prevention is better than after care. If you take the proper steps to protect your dog from the public and the public from your dog there will most likely never be a situation like this popping up. Don't allow your dog to run around loose in an insecure area Keep an eye on passerby and do not assume that everyone wants to love on your dog.
