Live concert reviews: Mindless Self Indulgence

Mindless Self Indulgence brought their If tour to Harpos in Detroit on Saturday, June 21. M.S.I. is a New York rock band that combines a number of different elements into their music including electronica, punk and industrial rock. After touring on 2007's Projekt Revolution tour with My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park, M.S.I.'s fan base has grown immeasurably. They released their fourth album If back in April and are currently on tour through September.

This time around, M.S.I. had fellow electronica bands Julien-K and Birthday Massacre open for them. Both bands complement M.S.I.'s sound and they did a good job of revving up the massive Harpos crowd. Julien-K toured with M.S.I. during Projekt Revolution. They are most well known for their Transformers soundtrack hit Technical Difficulties. Throughout the tour, Birthday Massacre has begun to gain a large following of their own and their set list has continued to grow. Lead singer Chibi has a great voice and a lot of stage presence. The set highlights were hits Blue, Violet, and Video Kid.

M.S.I. played a nineteen song set list comprised mostly of songs off the new cd including current hit Lights Out. They opened with fan favorite Shut Me Up and closed with classic I Hate Jimmy Page. Although the set leaned towards their newer stuff, they still managed to throw in a number of older hits as well. The highlights of the night were new song Never Wanted To Dance that had the entire crowd moving to the beat and their wildly successful hit Straight To Video which helped break them into the mainstream. The packed crowd seemed to gain more and more energy as the night grew on and responded well to the group's new material.

One of the reasons M.S.I. has become so popular is because of the wild antics of lead singer Jimmy Urine. From antagonizing the crowd to donning fairy wings he never fails to entertain. Throughout the evening at Harpos, he was babbling about nothing and everything. He spoke about how diverse the audience was, then proceeded to single out different people pointing out their faults. At one point Urine spoke about selling out and how they themselves have sold out with glee. Later, he took off his shirt and urged the audience to give him clothes. After donning a bra, tie, blouse, and skirt he yelled, "Why are you dressing me like Amy Winehouse?" Suffice it to say, the Detroit crowd got it's money's worth.
