The challenges in the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies schedule

When the 2008 baseball season begins, the Philadelphia Phillies will have a schedule that is full of challenges. And those challenges began right after they were knocked out of the Playoff's last season in the National League Championship Series against the Colorado Rockies. But without some help, they would have never have made it to the post season. The Phillies faced one of the biggest challenges any team has every had. The challenge of was to win every single game that was left in the season. They also needed the 1st place Mets to have one of thee, if not thee most historic collapses in the history of baseball.

With only 16 games to go in the season, something remarkable would have to occur. And it did. After winning 14 of their final 17 games, the Phillies took full advantage of one of the greatest collapses in baseball history, when the 1st place NY Mets blew a 7 game lead with only 17 games to go in the season. The Phillies trailed the 1st place Mets by 7 games on September 12th, and they went on and played near flawless baseball as they went 13-3 in that stretch. That final weekend of the season was against the 1st place Mets. After splitting the 1st 2 games, it came down to that Sunday, the 162nd game of the season. The Phillies won, and made baseball history as no team has ever come back to win their Division after being out of 1st place by 7 games, with only 16 game to go. Unfortunately, the Phillies dreams got crushed when they got knocked out of thr playoff's by a red hot Colorado Rockies team. A team that won it's past 14 out of 15 games.

When their schedule came out for the upcoming 2008 season, the Phillies saw right away that the challenges for 2008 were in the 1st month. They open the season having to play 12 straight games in a row before their 1st day off. The Phillies began the season with a 2 game home stand against their division rivals, the Washington Nationals. Then they go on the road for a 4 game stop and face Ken Griffey Jr. and the Cincinnati Reds. After that series, they work their way East as they face their much hated, divisional rivals, the NY Mets, authors of last year's epic collapse, in a 3 game series at Shea Stadium. The Phillies know the Mets will be out for revenge because of how last year ended, so they know the challenge will be tough. Especially since they have 6 games against the Mets in the 1st month of the season. When they finish up with the Mets, the travel back home for a 9 game home stand
