A "fun" job for a teen almost seems like an oxymoron these days. While some teens need to work, and some actually want to, many more appear to prefer sitting around texting, phoning, and playing on the computer or Xbox. However, a "fun" job for a teen is usually A) anything with other teens, and/or B) anyplace where teens like to hang out.

A mall food court, for the younger set, or any "cool" store in the mall for those over 18 are excellent places to start. Many retail stores require that clerks be at least 18 years old, but fast food places often hire those who are 15 or 16. Frequently, too, the mall hours are more palatable to parents who must tote their teen back and forth, and if they happen to get off early now and again they have a relatively safe place to stay and wait for their ride. Security, too, in a mall is usually quite good, so the job is both fun and safe.

Food courts have their perks, from discounted food to looking cool in those awesome polyester uniforms. Okay, just kidding on the uniform part - have yet to meet a teen who's happy with a regulation work outfit. But discounts - now we're talking! Oh, and the free drinks.

Amusement parks often hire teens for the summer, and include some weekends both before school is out and into the fall. These jobs pay quite well, for part time summer work, but transportation can be a problem as the parks are usually located some distance from bus lines and the hours can run rather late into the night. The hiring process is quite competitive, as those lucky enough to land a position usually return for some years.

There are a ton of positions available at amusement parks, such as ride operators, concession workers, or even dressing in a goofy costume to scareer, greet the kids! Of course, please see above mention of "cool uniforms".

Camp counseling can also be fun for a teen - they have time to hang with others, but if one likes working with younger kids, this can't be beat. The pay can be nominal, but includes room and board. No transport needed, as counselors live on the premises for 4-8 weeks at a stretch.

Campfires, swimming, crafts, boating - camps offer all of these and more, so teens can be active while working, and have fun right along with all the campers.

Volunteer work can be rewarding, it's much easier to get hired, and the hours are usually flexible. Depending on a teen's interest, there can be many opportunities to develop skills, learn more about a chosen subject, and just to help out. Nursing homes, animal shelters, and libraries are all good places to apply.

For teens who want to work, there are plenty of opportunities. But get started early, for the best selection and the coolest openings. Don't forget those jobs which require muscle and sweat - often those pay the most!
