In this day of the Internet and a super abundance of information on any topic, we're accustomed to reading all kinds of hype for money, health, and wealth accumulation. Sometimes it's difficult to extract the truth from the paid ads, but when it comes to vitamin C we may not be up to par on the many great benefits it provides in out health and wellness.
Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, may well be super vitamin for all the known benefits it provides. It's a water-soluble vitamin known for a great variety of benefits and promotion of wellness. Vitamin C is safe and supplements may be taken any time. Ascorbic acid helps build the immune system, reduce inflammation, healthy circulatory system, and helps the body deal with toxins.
When we have a cold or flu, vitamin C usually tops our list of help to fight off the cold, build our resistance, and get us back on our feet. C can do more than that of course; it can also act as anti-histamine and it helps in the manufacture "feel good" chemicals. [www.pubmed.gov]
The human system doesn't manufacture vitamin C; we obtain it from our diets that include citrus fruits and vegetables; whether we receive enough C in our diets depends on our eating habits and our preparation of food. Overcooking and processed foods rob foods of valuable vitamins and minerals. In this day of fast food convenience, we may be deficient in the C vitamin.
Ascorbic acid (C) is well known for its antioxidant properties and that element appears to aid in oxidative damage for health improvement for people with chronic disease. Although more clinical studies are needed to substantiate it, it makes good sense because of the cumulative immune building properties and help in improving the circulatory system.
Most of us are well aware of the use of orange juice that is loaded with vitamin C when a diabetic person begins to feel the effects of high blood sugars. Vitamin C helps the body absorb insulin thereby combating the levels of sugar in the body.
Heart patients and others may benefit by adding vitamin C to their established treatment. Because it is water soluble, it is safe to take, but its good practice to let your physician know the kinds of supplements and amounts you take, for your medical records.
How much vitamin C should you take? The FDA has revised the daily requirements of C upward to 75mg for women and 90mg for men. If C is being used for building the immune system, 200mg per day is the recommended dosage. [www.pubmed.gov]
Clinical Use of Vitamin C
Clinical use of ascorbic acid, sometimes include massive doses up to 100 grams of C for seriously ill patients. By bombarding the human system with vitamin C the doctors are relying on the immune boosting and healing properties of C for improved health. Some doctors use vitamin C as part of their treatment for cancer, eye disease and neuro-degenerative conditions.
More clinical trials are needed to establish the effectiveness of vitamin C and its use in clinical treatment.
The FDA hasn't approved all vitamin C treatments, but it doesn't stop people from receiving 10 to 50 sessions of vitamin C for hardening of arteries and cancer. As clinical trials continue, we can hope to see new methods of administering C and obtain established guidelines for its use and effectiveness.
Vitamin C provides daily benefits for your health and well being. Adding orange juice to your daily intake is the easiest way I can think of to add more C to your diet. Think of all the known benefits it makes available to your system; it makes good sense to take vitamin C, and who knows? Vitamin C may turn out to be the super vitamin of the century.
