Natural high fiber foods

The average American does not consume enough fiber in their daily diet. Fiber helps clean out your system and is shown to help prevent several types of cancer, as well as help treat high cholesterol and diabetes. A high-fiber diet can actually help sweep out harmful elements before your body has a chance to absorb them.

There are many natural and delicious foods that are full of fiber as well as flavor. Begin slowly when you decide to add high fiber foods into your diet - too much can cause intestinal distress. However, soon you will find it easy to get all your required fiber every day.

Beans

Beans are an excellent source of fiber as well as protein. Black, kidney, pinto, garbanzo, and white beans all have at least twelve grams of fiber per cup. Lentils are another wonderful addition. Serve beans with brown rice and not only are you upping your fiber intake, you are eating a complete protein.

Oatmeal

While you should avoid the prepackaged oatmeal laden with sugar, making your own steel-cut or rolled oats in the morning is a healthy way to begin your day. Oatmeal doesn't have to be a boring breakfast! Add honey and your favorite berries to create a sweet and satisfying bowl of oatmeal that provides plenty of fiber and keeps you full through the morning.

Nuts and Seeds

While many people avoid nuts because they are high in fat, these delicious treats are also high in protein and fiber. The fat that nuts contain is healthy and necessary for your body to function properly. Keep an eye on your portion sizes when adding nuts to your diet, but don't be afraid of them! Almonds and flax seed are especially healthy choices in this category.

Fruits

Whatever your favorite fruits are, they are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Eat fruits such as apples and pears with their skin to benefit from their high fiber status. Berries are particularly good choices for people looking to add more fiber to their diets. They are especially a delicious treat in the summer when most varieties are in season.

Vegetables

We all know that we should be getting more fresh vegetables in our diets. Dark, leafy green vegetables not only provide plenty of fiber, they are full of necessary vitamins and minerals. Broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, and peppers are just a few great choices. Try to eat several different colored vegetables every day to maximize the nutritional benefits.

You will be doing your body a favor by making sure to eat a well balanced diet every day. You will provide it with all the nutrition it needs to function at its best. Increasing your fiber intake can help you stay healthy through your entire life. Try a new, high fiber dish today.
